Mayor's Commission Summary - February 2019

2019 February Summary

Ed Mitchell, Blount County Mayor

Mayor’s Commission Summary – February 2019

The February Commission Meeting was last night (February 21).  There were 14 items of new business on the agenda passed by the Commission.  I’ll touch base on a few:

  • The County supported the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department applying for a Community Development Block Grant that will allow the Fire Department to relocate a new fire station on Chapman Highway at the Blount County line.  This grant is no cost to the County and allows the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department to provide a better service to the Blount County residents.

  • The Commission also passed a resolution urging the Tennessee General Assembly to restore the full 5% of the Mortgage Tax back to the Blount County Register’s Office.  The State had taken this from the County in 2001 to be used in the State General Fund.  If successful, the returned funds of 2.4% will add $107,739.00 back into the Register’s Office.  This is an item our Register of Deed’s Phyllis Crisp has been working to correct.

  • The Commission also authorized the Mayor to sign and execute a lot line adjustment between Blount County and the City of Alcoa, which will allow the landfill to have better access to the purchased property next to the landfill in order to get needed dirt for the operation of the landfill.  This also reduces any adverse impact the moving of dirt may have on neighbors nearby.

  • The Commission also passed approval of grant applications as well as the adjustments of various budgets to reflect grants received for departments within the County departments.

  • During Announcements, it was reported that former County Commissioner Ken Melton’s surgery went well and everyone was asked to keep him and his family in your prayers.
